I could easily be consumed by Super Tuesday, but I remembered what tomorrow is….and I got to thinking…

Ash Wednesday and the Lenten season are viewed by many as a Roman Catholic practice, but many Protestants also celebrate this special time of the church year. The Season of Lent is one of the oldest observations of the Christian Church (meaning believers in Christ…not a specific denomination).

Here are some interesting reads on the history of Lent….here…..here….here

Most likely, by this point, I have lost most of the non-Christian readers of this blog…probably many of the Christian readers as well. I thought with all the other random, prideful, and useless information I post on this blog, I would attempt to remind those of you still reading this post about this Season.

This is a season in which the church prepares for observing the greatest moment in History.

Sure, Christmas is a wonderful season, celebrated around the world by Christians and non-Christians (for obviously different reasons). But even Christians’ celebration of Christmas has become quite commercialized (and I am both the pot and the kettle).

The birth of Christ was a miraculous event, but the reason Christians celebrate Easter is for a much greater reason.

This greater reason is so that we may not be crushed. Crushed by sin.

God crushed His Son instead…and by crushing Jesus Christ in our stead, provided man a way to commune with the Holy God.

Jesus knew this was His purpose and he prepared for that day.

And as he prepared for that day, so we should also prepare for the celebration of His resurrection.

National politics will be the main focus of the media for the next few days/weeks, and you may hear a little blurb on TV about Fat Tuesday, but remember Ash Wednesday is tomorrow and so begins the Lenten Season. I hope we can prepare our hearts for the celebration of the death, burial, and resurrection of the Savior, Jesus Christ….the most important event in human history.

For Paul writes:(1 Corinthians 15:54-58)

“then shall come to pass the saying that is written:

“Death is swallowed up in victory.”
“O death, where is your victory?
O death, where is your sting?”
The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.”[ESV]
