The Family That Plays Together

Sometimes I wish I were a musician. I wish I could bestow a deep appreciation of music onto the boys, but then again, they don’t know that daddy only knows 3 chords. So until such time, I’ll keep them rocking out.

Several months ago The Foo Fighters were on Austin City Limits. I recorded the show and watch it from time to time. It brought a tear to my eye, when a few months ago, while watching the show for the umteenth time, The Firstborn came running into the living room and said, “Oh daddy, who’s that?”

I replied, “That, buddy, is The Foo Fighters.”

To which he responded, “Oh I like them.”

He darted to his room and emerged with guitar in hand and said, “I need my pick.”

From that day on, when the stresses of being a toddler get to be too much, The Firstborn asks, “Dad, can we rock out with the Foo Fighters.”

*sniffle sniffle tear*

“Of course we can, son.”

To which he almost always says, “Alright. I need my pick. Stay right there.”

We now have the Subsequent Child in on the act and The Wife wishes we would take this show on the road.

We aren’t very good…yet.

Rock on little ones, rock on.

Knoxville’s Got Talent – Shawn Irwin to Audition in Atlanta

Knoxville’s very own Shawn Irwin has been asked to audition for America’s Got Talent. He is heading to Atlanta, GA this weekend for an audition. Shawn tells KTOWN:

“They contacted me on YouTube.com after seeing some videos I had posted on the web site”

Now I will admit I have watched the show from time to time. At times I think they should call it “America Has No Talent But Crazy Folks That Want To Get On TV.”

But every now and then, they actually showcase some talented folks. I think you’ll agree that Shawn Irwin has a pretty good shot at making it through the audition.

The Gourds…My Kind of Music

I don’t know why I am surprised that whenever I watch Austin City Limits I find another band I had never heard of, and I love their music.

I saw that the Los Lonely Boys were going to be on last Suturday, and since The Meester has fallen in love with his “ta-tar” (guitar), I thought that he would should see some of the best guitar music I’ve heard in a long time.

After we watched rocked out to Los Lonely Boys a band called the Gourds were up next. Wow. What a bunch of great good ole’ redneck feel good music.

From their website: Austin, Texas’ The Gourds have never been much on sentiment. Since the band started defining Gourds Music, as it has come to be known, … they have chugged through America fueled by music and a near-pathological need for a good time. And while songwriters Kevin Russell and Jimmy Smith have written the most dense, reference-laden country songs of the last 10 years and almost single-handedly made a place for deep thought in a genre of “Honky Tonk Badonkadonks” they have, for the most part, shied away from the tear-in-my-beer ballads that made country music a commercial powerhouse over the last 50 years.
