Books, books, books.

We are preparing to sell our house and move.  That is why blogging has fallen to the least improtant item on my list of things to get done.  Yes, the list has changed from a To Do list, to a Get This Done list.  When you are tyring to fix up the house, slap on some new paint, put all your junk in storage so that people can’t tell that you have two kids and two dogs when they come to see the house, while living with two kids and two dogs…things are to do they are to be done.

Done means complete, do means…I’ll get around to them.  I’ve been doing this to do list for four years now….typical contractor.

Anyway, in all this packing and moving I realized a sad fact.  We have lots of books that I have never read.  I have every intention in reading them, but still they sit on the shelf looking all sophistaced and important…and unfortunately dusty. I need to move them from the To Do side of my intentions to the Get Done side of my actions.

Don’t get me wrong, I am reading three books right now, and that’s my other problem with books.  I read multiple books at a time but sometimes never quite finish them.  Wow waht does that say about me.

I am finishing When Sinners Say I Do…I started this book last year, blazed through it and then misplaced it and now recently found it, so that counts as still reading right.

My book for spiritual discipline is The Enemy Within: Straight Talk about the Power and Defeat of Sin…a difficult read.  Not because of how it’s written but the subject matter…indwelling sin.  One friend basically described to as John Owen for Dummies.

My work toilet book (this is the book I keep at work and take to the toilet and on lunch breaks) is Home By Another Way.  This book has opened my eyes to a different kind of writing and books.

The first two books are well written in the sense that they deal very precisely with the subject matter and give the reader all the info that they need to understand the thesis and applications described in them.  The third book, is unlike any book I’ve ever read (which isn’t really saying much).

Home By Another Way is about…well…is about a nice vacation spot.  In and of itself, the book’s subject matter is not all that interesting, but…and this is a very big but…the book is so well written, I look forward to reading more about this dude’s vacation spot.  As far as I can tell, the book is just about Robert Benson’s vacation spot and his observations while there.  I know, it sounds like it would be the equivalent of watching someone else’s sideshow from their vacation…but it’s so well written.  I have come to really appreciate an author that has mastered his craft and paints pictures with words…a skill that I obviously haven’t the slightest inclination toward.

Maybe when I unpacked all those books I’ll finally get around to reading them.

  • You may want to put all the unread books together after unpacking. After that make the commitment to yourself to complete one book a month. You may find that setting a monthly/weekly/daily reading goal allows you to complete more books.

Finished 11 myself last year [The goal was 12]. Sometimes we fall short of our goals. Set some and do your best ;)

    David
